This is a real thing, a condition recognised by psychiatrists as relaxation-induced anxiety. Eventually, I go upstairs to lie silently on my bed, having a small panic attack. I start half-watching a documentary about veganism on Netflix, while idly scrolling Twitter on my phone and, with my other hand, inexplicably researching the 1980s band DeBarge on Wikipedia on my laptop. When my wife and kids are out of the house, and I have no pressing work deadlines, I become anxious: the nagging thought that I really should be doing something productive but can’t think what, the pressure to absorb myself in something genuinely relaxing. It sounds nice in theory, but by midday on 28 December, usually while watching Mrs Doubtfire on Channel 5, I tend to slip into an existential crisis. I am supposed to just relax and do nothing. I have always found the late December void we are currently enduring to be discombobulating and stressful.

DEC was an important company for computer history, but it missed out on trends as fundamental as the personal computer and (initially) the popularity of UNIX-based operating systems, and the company struggled to reshape its fortunes throughout the 1990s.ĭEC, trying to kickstart things, needed a way to promote what the Alpha could do, and it was decided that a project to highlight the Alpha’s capabilities at chewing through a massive database was just the way to do it. Founded by Ken Olsen and Harlan Anderson in 1957, the two former MIT researchers leveraged venture capital to build computers for industry-and found success by focusing on relatively small minicomputers over mainframes. How AltaVista, our first good search engine, fell into the digital abyssĭigital Equipment Corporation survived for more than 40 years as an independent company, but it was a company built for an earlier era of computing-and while it adapted better than contemporaries like Wang Laboratories, it ultimately began to struggle at the start of the 1990s, and ultimately could not find its footing into the modern day.īut on the way, less than three years before the company was sold off, DEC almost accidentally stumbled upon a mainstream web application that in many ways is more familiar to regular users than the groundbreaking PDP and VAX computer lines that the firm made its name on in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.ĭuring that period, DEC was one of the most important computer companies around. KALAMAZOO, Mich.-The University Libraries has acquired the complete working archive of author and illustrator, David Small, and author, Sarah Stewart. Author and illustrator David Small and author Sarah Stewart By the middle of the book I found myself invested in Jim, Vin, and Marie Therese. I was getting into the fight of good vs evil. When I finally got the feel of the world, I liked the whole paranormal Demons and Angels side to the story. So there I was thinking of dnfing because I was getting bored, but I pushed on and was surprised to find that I enjoyed the second half. I felt like the info dump slowed the book down and at times I got bored. On top of all that info there was development of the hero Vin, the heroine Marie Therese, the demon Devina, and the plot. There was also lot of character development for Jim, who is not the hero but will be in all the books. The first half of the book had a lot of world building. Ward wrote it I would love it, but it was just okay for me. I would say it's more of an Urban Fantasy with some romance in it. Going into this read I thought it was going to be a romance with some angels in it. Now if I am going to be honest I will say that the reason I am reading this series is because there are rumors that the villain Devina might be crossing over to BDB and I wanted to know about her so I wouldn't be confused. Don't read this series expecting it to be like BDB at all. That being said this book wasn't like the Black dagger Brotherhood Series that I adore. Ward and I think she is a super talented author.
